Free Will and the Soul: Partners, not Opponents

Some of the most common questions I hear from students and clients are these:

“If my soul wants one thing, and my free will wants another, am I living life the ‘wrong’ way? “Why do we have free will if it sometimes feels different from what the soul wants? And why does free will sometimes feel like it takes us on detours away from our soul’s path?”

These are beautiful—and very human—questions. Let’s explore.

Soul and Free Will: Working Together

Think of your soul as the compass and your free will as the driver of the car.

  • The soul holds the greater map of your possibilities and options—the deep desires for growth, joy, and expansion—and your potential.

  • Free will is how you choose the route, how fast you go, what detours you make, and whether you stop along the way.

Even if you take a “wrong” turn, you’re never truly lost. The soul recalibrates, offering gentle nudges, synchronicities, or sometimes even discomfort to help you realign.

Why We Have Free Will

Free will isn’t here to mess things up—it’s here so we can experience ourselves as conscious creators. If everything were scripted by the soul, there’d be no growth, no discovery, no joy in choosing love, courage, or truth. Free will lets us shape the soul’s potentials in our own unique way.

Is There a “Wrong” Way to Live?

So many people worry about living life the “wrong” way. But from the soul’s perspective, there are no wasted lives.

  • Some lifetimes are about joy and expansion.

  • Some are about healing or balancing old patterns.

  • Some are about quiet service, creativity, or simply holding love.

Not every experience is a “lesson.” Growth also comes through pleasure, rest, connection, and play. Even detours add richness to the soul’s wisdom.

When Soul and Free Will Feel Different

When free will choices and soul desires seem out of sync, it often shows up as tension, restlessness, or dissatisfaction. This isn’t punishment—it’s information. The soul is saying: “There’s more available to you. You don’t have to settle.”

Free will then has the choice: continue on this path, or shift direction. Either way, the experience serves the soul’s growth.

A Gentle Reassurance

You cannot live your life “wrong.” Free will is not a trap; it is a gift. Every choice adds to your soul’s wisdom, whether through ease or challenge. The soul is not your opponent—it is your greatest ally, cheering for your fulfillment.

Journaling Prompts to Explore

  • When have I felt my free will and my soul working in harmony?

  • What nudges or discomfort might be my soul inviting me to realign?

  • How can I invite more joy, play, and curiosity into my choices?

Remember: your soul and your free will are partners on this journey. Together, they are guiding you toward a soul-led life of joy, clarity, and purpose.
